For the new Audi A4 a rigid body structure and an ingenious pattern of deformation behaviour, the very latest occupant restraint systems, and technical features as the SIDEGUARD head airbag system were intended to achieve an exemplary level of occupant protection. This made it necessary to achieve coordination between: - the vehicle's deformation behavior, - the action of the restraint systems, - the resilience of the trim elements inside the car, - the interior styling to achieve passive safety. A useful basis is provided by the various national laws and the familiar vehicle rating procedures. The assessment of passenger-car road accidents is also considered. In the event of a side impact the complete side of the vehicle acts as a restraint system. The resulting protection potential depends on the coordination of all the individual elements within the complete system. Optimisation of occupant protection takes place in systematic iterative stages with the following variables: - body and seat deformation behaviour, - airbag parameters, - trim-element geometries and materials.
