The initiators for Airbag and belt-pretensionners are squibs where a pyrotechnical reaction is triggered by an electrical firing signal. These initiators act as converters, transforming the input signal delivered by the Electrical Central Unit (ECU) into a pyrotechnical output. Thus there are two kinds of tuning: The output has to be compatible with the inflators needs, the input has to handle the signal from the ECUs. This paper deals with this last requirement and describes the priming phenomena in the initiators. As far as the so called 'hot-wire devices' are concerned, the transformation of the electrical energy in the bridge, the heat transfer to the surrounding materials, the initiation step of the active material and then the propagation of the pyrotechnical event are characterized. The author explains how to design the electrical/pyrotechnical interface of the initiators. The present initiation systems are considered, along with systems tailored for future developments (thin-film and semi-conductor bridges).
