Prague-based designers Plynoprojekt, PLC, produced in 1989 a design for the development of an unlined gas storage reservoir in a cavern excavated into solid rock. The design was drawn up in response to an invitation by Transgas, motivated by its efforts to incorporate a super-peak balancing source within its gas system. The geological prospecting in the area singled out for development -depleted uranium mines near Pribam- took two years; the geological properties of the site and the financial considerations were defended successfully; and development was started in 1992. In six years' time, test operation of the new project was launched in 1998. The period of 15 month in test operation covered by this contribution, has validated the design which had envisaged a daily export capacity of 6 mcm, and has even indicated an opportunity to enhance this performance to 9 mcm/day. In the period under review, maximum reservoir pressure reached 8.5 MPa; this level will be increased tom the designed 12.5 MPa, depending on the rising mine water table in the adjacent uranium basin. The behaviour of the cavern will at all times be compared against a mathematical model simulating this artificially created natural gas reservoir excavated into solid hard rock.
