In 1981, NEC started the development of ESA (Earth Sensor Assembly) which is employed for the sensor of satellite attitude determination in space. The development was accelerated under a contract with NASDA from 1985 and realized the flight model for Engineering Test Satellite which was launched in 1993. In addition, as an earth sensor for commercial satellites, NEC was achieved by GE (General Electric company) and SSL (Space System Loral) of US in 1993 and has continued to supply ESA units for them. Since then, the total amount of orders of the ESA is 158 units, delivered 135 units, and launched approximately more than 70 units as of March 1, 2001. During this activity, the ESA unit has been improved for obtaining more reliable performance as the commercialized and real use equipment having an influence on our daily life. The following is an explanation of the design features, performance, and history of development & delivery.
