The obsolete Russian rolling stock demands permanent diagnostics and repair to maintain its availabity. In particular, efficiency of the electrical equipment of the stock is of crucial importance. Personal computer-aided (64 MB) monitoring and diagnostics of driving motors of the car control system, variable resistor and thiristor controllers as well as acceleration and braking relays were implemented to assure the reliability of the electrical equipment of the train. The diagnostic system can be used for currents up to 1000 A, voltage up to 1000 V and rate up to 100 km/h. Computer programs for the data collection, screeening, processing and storage were prepared and implemented. Oscillograph and spectroanalyzer programs were included for operational monitoring of the signals. Power characteristics of rail cars (type Ez3) with and without damages were presented as examples.
