The Corrosion Task Force of the Automotive/Steel Partnership (A/SP) developed the SAE J2334 cyclic laboratory test for determining the cosmetic corrosion resistance of autobody steel sheet. This test has an excellent correlation with results obtained in five-year tests on road-driven cars in the Snowbelt area of the United States and Canada. It is now being widely used by the North American Automakers and their suppliers. To increase the speed and improve the precision of J2334, a series of experiments were conducted in which the effects of experimental parameters were varied. The paper describes a full factorial experiment to determine the effects of wet-stage temperature, sodium chloride concentration, and calcium chloride concentration. The results show that the test is accelerated by increasing the wet-stage temperature, and by increasing the amounts of salt. However, increases in the salt concentration have an adverse on the rank order of results.
