Metal injection molded parts can be found today in a variety of different applications such as medical apparatus, office equipment, telecommunications, hardware, sporting goods as well as ornamental industry. Furthermore, applications in the automotive sector have shown a significant growth over the last years. This depends certainly on the fact that MIM is more and more acknowledged on the market and that the properties of MIM products are comparable or better than wrought steel, offering at the same time outstanding design capabilities. As a consequence, MIM is today a highly competitive manufacturing process compared to e.g. investment casting. Within this contribution the different features in design and material properties offered by MIM are demonstrated for a special part supplied to the automotive industry.
