In hybrid drivetrain configurations some sort of battery storage is needed. From a battery point of view this should have only few single cells in series as battery maintanance becomes more difficult and battery life possibly reduced with an increased number of cells. On the other hand for an efficient drive using standard components a high voltage is desirable. To meet both requirements a bidirectional 40 kW converter is employed to decouple the high voltage (600 V ) DC link from the low voltage battery (150 V). In addition this DC/DC converter allows a dedicated control of the battery current according to the battery status as determined by means of a modular Battery Management System. This way the design and operation of the drivetrain can be optimized further by making use of the increased number of degrees of freedom in such a system.
