Delay Time Analysis (DTA) is a pragmatic mathematical concept which has been developed as a means to model maintenance decision problems. This paper proposes a model using DTA to ascertain the optimal inspection period for fishing vessel equipment depending on the criteria selcted. The two criteria modeled are downtime and cost. The current practice involves the maintenance being carried out in port during the discharging operation. As the time between discharges can vary considerably, it allows for failures on the machinery to propagate and to lead to a catastrophic breakdown. This paper offers an alternative solution to the current maintenance practice to reduce costs incurred and downtime suffered by fishing vessels. Test data from an oceangoing trawler are used to demonstrate the proposed approach. The optimal inspection period for a particular equipment is obtained. A sensitivy analysis on the optimal inspection period is also carried out.
