Battery technology is the main obstacle of the commercialization of electric vehicles (EVs). From the battery aspect normally two measures could be taken: (1) To develop new types of batteries with the aim of raising the power density and energy density of batteries to pursue better driving range and performance, it is essential to the increase of the availability of EVs. (2) To improve the utilization of present-day batteries, its purpose is to maximize the available capacity usage of batteries through providing the EV driver with accurate and reliable information on the available capacity and thus the driving range for EVs. The very important issue is to find the appropriate calculation approach of the available capacity of batteries. Based on the artificial neural network the new calculation approach of the available capacity is presented, which is taken different discharge currents and different temperatures into account during the discharging period. Comparisons between the results calculated from the newly proposed approach and the data collected from experiment show they have a good agreement, and therefore verify this new approach can provide the accurate available capacity. It should be pointed out that although the presented model based on artificial neural network is obtained from the experimental data of lead acid batteries, this new approach can also be used in the calculation of the available capacity for other types of batteries.
