In this study, the methods of charging nickel/metal hydride (Ni/MH) batteries for an electric vehicle were investigated. Charging and discharging conditions were varied in an attempt to improve high-energy efficiency and to increase the cycle life. A battery system with 12 modules was subjected to a cycling test with the discharge using a dynamic stress test (DST) 120 pattern and a few steps of constant-current charge. A cycling test of more than 1500 cycles with the DST120 pattern discharge decreased the amount of DST120-pattern discharge by 20%, but that of constant-current discharge by only 7%, due to a gradual decrease of discharge power during cycling tests. Two-step charging with the first-step current of 0.5 CA is completed in less than two and a half hours after DST 120-patterns discharging by to 80 % DOD. The three-step charging with the first step of 1.0 CA shortens the charging time to about one and a half hours. The cycle life is independent of the amount of charging current. This type battery can be rapidly/quickly charged. At the low temperature of -10 deg C, the discharge capacity of the battery system was no less than that under room temperature with constant current from 0.2 CA to 1.0 CA. The low-temperature condition decreases the discharge power by 50 %, thus shortening the driving mileage at high speed.
