For high-power applications Japan Storage Battery Co., Ltd. has newly developed the cylindrical valve-regulated lead-acid cell 'GS SPR10'. This cell has specific power (power density) of at least 500 W/kg (1550 W/l), which is far higher than the conventional valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries used until now in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Its cycle life performance is superior when used on the operation under the partial state of charge (PSOC), such as in HEV application. These advantages are conferred by two innovations: The high compression that is applied to an element consisting of two plates and one absorptive glass mat (AGM) separator which are wound in a spiral, and the development of the special negative active material for HEV application.
