This paper has dealt with an investigation into the decrease in FC productivity caused by the fuel containing a large amount of impurities. This problem surfaces when the methanol reforming system is used as a means of supplying fuel to FCs installed in vehicles. The results of the investigation are summarized as follows: 1) Components of the gas generated by the methanol reformer for vehicles were predicted and specific components and their concentrations were identified. 2) Various experiments and analyses were conducted to determine the adverse effect of CO poisoning on the productivity of FC; and the following results were obtained. 2a) The actual development of CO poisoning was scrutinized by focusing on adsorption and desorption of CO molecules. 2b) Given the current level of technology, the residual CO concentration in the reformed gas was high and the direct supply of such reformed gas to FC would drastically affect FC productivity. 2c) If the FC underwent CO poisoning at a high concentration, no significant improvement in FC productivity could be expected by operating the FC at increased pressure. 2d) Raising the operating temperature can dramatically alleviate CO poisoning.
