This paper focuses an one joint government-industry research effort, aimed at developing and demonstrating advanced hybrid electric technologies and vehicle subsystems for transit bus applications. The Demonstration of Universal Electric Transportation Subsystems(DUETS) Program brought together a consortia of private companies involved in design and development of advanced vehicle subsystems to adapt existing military and commercial technologies to the requirements of a hybrid electric system for a heavy-duty vehicle. Originally a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funded program, managed by the Federal Transit Administration, the project was subsequently transferred to the Federal Transit Administration. In Phase I a hybrid electric drivetrain with dual compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered rotary engines, dualhub-mounted wheel motors, a semi-active suspension system, and a fault tolerant, fiber optic vehicle management system were integrated into a 40 foot (12 m) transit bus. Phase II, with participation by Nova Bus Incorporated, Honeywell, and Davis Technologies, focused on modification and optimization of the propulsion system to a more commercially acceptable configuration with a dieselelectric hybrid drive and a single traction motor. Phase II also involved extensive testing and demonstration, including emissions and performance testing, and revenue service testing in New York City. Exhaust emission tests, approximating real-world operation, were conducted on the vehicle and revealed substantially lower emissions than current diesel-powered buses, with emissions level comparable or better than CNG-powered buses. Efficiency test, both in laboratory and in revenue service, showed fuel economy improvements of up to 30 % when operating with minimal capture of energy from regenerative braking.
