Protecting natural resources, reducing CO2 and pollutant emissions - these are the principal outline conditions facing the transport of the future. We must create the basis for this today. Improvements in propulsion technology play a key role. This report outlines tendencies in the development of propulsion technologies for road vehicles and aircraft. The present-day conventional turbofan engine has reached a very high degree of perfection and reliability. It. will be further developed, slightly simplified and become some 5 % more fuel-efficient with lower costs of operation. This engine will dominate air fleets until 2030. However, the rapid growth of air traffic will require further improvements in fuel consumption in the longer term beyond 2020, due to increasing fuel prices and ecological requirements. For this scenario, the future engines will explore the geared turbofan with bypass ratios of 12 to 15 in order to increase propulsive efficiency towards 0,83 together with a simplified low-pressure turbo machinery system comprising 30 to 40 % fewer stages. A further significant increase in thermal efficiency demands an unconventional cycle with compressor inter-coolers and recuperative heat exchangers. A lot of development work still needs to be carried out in order to bring this reliable, lightweight engine to fruition. However, this is possible, and the implementation of these unconventional approaches entirely depends on fuel prices / fuel availability and ecological demands.
