Extruded aluminum sections play a key weight-saving role in the transportation market. Engineering and technical support of Hoogovens Aluminium enables the customer to realize lightweight products with a high lifetime efficiency, combined with enormous time and cost savings in production. Use of large and complicated hollow sections in the railway market in order to achieve these targets will be demonstrated using an aluminum bodyshell for railway vehicles as examples. The process from the design of the first aluminum profiles until the final design of the bodyshell based on finite element analysis will be described. Pre-fabricated welded aluminum panels are an important contribution to the lightweight design of fast ferries and cruise liners. This paper will present the value-added production of these panels and the value creation for the customer. The fin ratio of extruded heat sinks for the electrical market often limits cooling performance. This paper will show how to increase the cooling performance by about 20 to 30 percent of heat sinks, based on a new production method. An optimal combination of minimum required materials and a maximum gain of cooling performance can be reached by using a high-precision computational fluid dynamic simulation.
