Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM) are gaining more and more importance for special drive applications. The paper describes new trends in the development of large synchronous machines with permanent magnet excitation. Materials currently available offer new possibilities for designing and manufacturing machines for special drive applications, e.g. traction or marine propulsion purposes. The design and the calculation of the magnetic circuit of a PMSM can be based on known methods. Neodym-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets are said to be of only low corrosion resistance. In this paper a propulsion drive with PMSM is presented as one example for such special drives, which add several advantages to the drive system, e.g. high efficiency and a simple cooling method.
