High strength electric resistance welded (ERW) steel tube is demanded for automobile parts in order to lighten those weight. The improvement of formability is also required. Kawasaki Steel Corp. has developed new steel tube products with ultra fine microstructure termed History (High-Speed Tube welding and Optimum Reducing technology) tube which have the high strength, excellent formability and uniformity of seam hardness. These superior features can be achieved by newly developed thermo-mechanical control process (TMCP) technology in the stretch reducer. The History tube has been preferably applied to automotive parts due to these excellent properties for tube fabrications. Consequently, the following results were obtained: (1) The History tube has uniform hardness distribution in the welded portion compared with ERW tube. (2) The History tube has the properties of both high strength and excellent formability. Its high tensile strength is obtained due to the ultra fine grain microstructure. Its improvement of the elongation is attributed to both the suppression of work hardening and the dispersed tiny cubic cementite in the fine ferrite microstructure. (3) Fatigue limit of the History tube was higher than that of ERW tube due to the higher tensile strength of the History tube in the same materials. (4) The proportional limit of torsion in the History tube was higher than that of ERW tube in comparison of the same tensile stength tubes. (5) Absorbed energy of the History tube at 1000 MPa strength was comparable with ERW tube at 1400, 1500 MPa strength. (6) The History tube has superior formability in bending. In the three point bending, the History tube was bent into U-shape without buckling on condition that bend radius was two times as large as diameter. In the stretch bending, the History tube was bent with smaller thickness reduction than ERW tube.
