There is an increasing reliance on rotary actuators in the automotive industry, mainly for valve actuation applications. The most prominent of these applications are Electronic Throttle Control, Electronic Gas Recirculation and Manifold Tuning Valve. A conventional solution is a DC motor plus gearbox, with feedback control usually achieved by using a potentiometer. In this paper, a novel actuator type will be presented which is direct drive and contactless and consists of embedding a magnet tile in a ferromagnetic rotor. Embedding the magnet yields higher performance for a given magnet volume and number of Ampere-turns. The torque versus position characteristic at nominal power is remarkably linear, and the system also exhibits a high peak-torque versus rated-torque ratio.
