Based on the existing product family CMS2000 and CDS3000, a universal magnetoresistive (MR) current sensor microsystem for the measurement of high currents in automotive applications has been developed. It uses a MR differentail magnetic field sensor chip and a mixed-signal ASIC mounted on a 14.6 mm x 17.8 mm ceramic substrate, packaged as dual in-line SMD component. The sensor system has been designed for use in the control unit of the 1999 Mannesmann camshaft starter-generator. The nominal current of the sensor is determined by the geometry of the primary U-shaped current conductor and its position relative to the MR sensor ship. Since the conductor is not part of the system, a large range of currents, typically from 5 A to 1000 A and above, can be measured with the same sensor simply by carefully designing the current conductor in the required application. The high sensitivity of the MR effect eliminates the need of magnetic field concentrators that are necessary for example in Hall effect based current sensors. The absence of field concentrators results in three major advantages. First of all, the current carrying conductor has not to be opened and put through the ferromagnetic core of the current transducer. Moreover, the problem of remancence in the core in case of large overcurrents is eliminated. Finally, it allows the development of extremely small and light-weight microsystems. Based on this concept, a microsystem for current measurement in the slot of a straight conductor is briefly described to demonstrate the potential of the MR technology in the field of current sensor microsystems.
