This paper deals with the electro-mechanical design of an innovative hold-down release device, actuated by shape memory wires, specifically developed to hold-down and release the solar wings of the 'SMART' microsatellite. The innovative concept adopted for this system allows a reliable and controlled release providing no pyroshock with a simple, low cost, low mass and low risk design. The mechanical assembly, in terms of working conditions and dimensioning cirteria, is described. The noise effects related to vibration at launch have been taken into account for the robustness and reliability of the design. The electrical assembly, including the components choice criteria for the specific space application is here included.
