First the authors reviewed the AutoPC architecture from hardware and software side and the ITS activity in the world. They picked up some features which seems to be beneficial to use AutoPC as the ITS platform. The point is expandable using expansion bus like USB to support the special hardware devices and the function can be realized using familiar Win32 IDE. This gave a chance to a lot of third party to join to ITS activities who eager to realize their own idea and expand their market. AutoPC has specified features to fit to vehicle environment like power management, which realize the vendor to test their application in the real world. A lot of system was eveloped based on Windows system on desktop and tested in the car. Even though the function seems to be working well in such a testing bench environment, it takes a lot of time to re-design for fitting to the rear vehicle environment which needs a tremendous work from hardware and software. Using AutoPC platform realize the reduction of development term and quick production launch. USB interface and PCMCIA interface are two door to outside in the current AutoPC. In future, other bus system like IDB-C or IEEE1394 will be supported. However, USB has already been a matured technology and various bugs has been reported and fixed. The bandwidth of 12 Mbps is not enough for multi-media data transfer but seems to be enough for usual data communication. The supporting of four kinds ( transaction mode gave the design flexibility depending on the device characteristics. They showed some examples of the development of ITS oriented system based of AutoPC including USB Navigation Unit, USB Telematic Unit and Traffic Information System. They are planning update their bus architecture depending on the late requirement but they are anticipating that there are three kinds of bus support in AutoPC, one of which is multi-media stream bus, one of which is the data communication with vehicle based on high reliability like IDB-C and the rest of which is consumer bus like USB. Finally, they introduced the concept of using the object oriented technology and Client-Server technology, while is still a preliminary investigation. COM and DCO technology is the key component to realize such system in vehicle environment.
