To establish customers' perception of the paint quality of a car body, visual assessment needs to be conducted on painted panels. This paper presents a visual assessment method and two statistical methods to deal with panel ranking in terms of paint appearance. As the visual assessment is a subjective procedure, these methods can reduce the risk of misjudgment and improve the accuracy and reliability of the test results. From the discussions above, following conclusions can be drawn: 1. As visual assessment is a subjective procedure, the presented two methods can effectively provide objective results on the panels to be evaluated, not only the rank of these panel, but also the quantified value for each panel. The result can be used as reference to evaluate the instrumental result. 2. The reliability of these methods is based on large number of observers. The number of observers must be large enough to ensure the accuracy of the results, which can be obscure some inconsistent judgments. 3. The half score and full comparison could be more important when the number of judgment is small. It can reduce the risk of misjudgment effect. 4. Extremely inconsistent observers are suggested to be excluded, because they have indistinguishability on the items. 5. These methods can be also applied to other product quality inspection.
