Leading European automotive manufacturers, steel manufacturers and researchers have joined in a research programme to investigate the three-dimensional (3D) measurement of steel sheet panels used in automotive manufacture. This paper describes the results of a large variability round-robin investigation shared between all the partners. The investigation has two parts. Firstly a general variability round-robin study has been performed where each partner measured a standard set of samples using their own equipment and calculated the parameters using their own software. Secondly a software variability round-robin study has been performed using the same raw data which was analysed using propriety software employed by each partner. The results and variability ranges will be presented. The conclusions will provide a set of guidelines to be used by manufacturers when using 3D surface measurements to assess manufactured surfaces.
