The instrumentation of big end bearings is part of a new approach for monitoring marine diesel engines. To date it was mostly the detection of oil mist (opacity) which served as a warning signal of overheating problems and imminent seizure. Oil mist, however, is no longer a reliable indicator with many high performance marine diesel engines. For that reason the International Association of Classification Societies IACS formulated a new SOLAS regulation (Safety of Life at Sea) in May 1998, demanding an equivalent device (to oil mist detection) (SC133). Such a device was introduced by Schoenaich based Dr. E. Horn GmbH of Germany in 1998. Several hundred units of the engine safety system TUFMON MEV 281 were already delivered by May 2000. Besides crankcase pressure, revolutions and engine filling the TUFMON system still monitors oil mist concentration. Psychology is one reason for this: Engineers are used to this measuring device. But an top of that oil mist is basically the last warning prior to the big bang. Since serious bearing damage always causes dramatic temperature increases, monitoring the bearing temperature is a perfect way of increasing the ship safety and additionally increasing the ship's overall economy. The newly patented measuring device is based on the principle of a thermocoupler. In the connecting rod a copper probe is installed. A first engine test has demonstrated that the measuring system shows a quick and sensitive reaction to changes of the bearing temperature. An important advantange of this new system is without doubt the tolerances which are permitted: The strategy of measurement allows mechanical tolerances of up to 4 mm. It was a conscious decision not to measure absolute bearing temperatures with the newly developed system, instead an equivalent electrical value is monitored. The truly crucial information is not the measured temperature but the change occurring between normal operating conditions and critical conditions. Only high gradients occurring within a short period of time act as meaningful information in this context.
