The ZOXY cell is a new kind of zink-oxygen (or zinc-air) battery cell developed in Germany recently, which is claimed as a high energy accumulator with the equivalent or even lower price to that of lead-acid battery. As a continued project on electric vehicle conversion in the institution, ZOXY cells have been applied to a 19-seater bus as the energy supplement to the booster lead-acid batteries for testing the drive range with one charge. The paper details the set-up of the charging system and the investigation into charging and discharging characteristics of the ZOXY cells during their application to a 19-seater electric bus.
