The oil, gas, and exploratory well drilling industry, both offshore and land based, has turned to pneumatic control to resolve an extreme hazard it was experiencing with the electronic control of its operation. Proof of this is the development of CSP Step Programmers (pneumatic programmable drum controllers) by Pneucon. CSP Step Programmers can provide the required intrinsically safe control of latching fingers, precluding a simultaneous release of multiple stands of drill pipe, something which could occur with the straight electronic control of the system.
