The contact resistance is determined by the composition and the hardness of the tin coating. The composition in the contact area of pure tin coatings change during fretting over life time due to material transfer, wear and oxidation. Oxides and debris tend to accumulate in the contact zone when using tin coatings. As a consequence the contact resistance increases. Silver coatings are less affected to fretting corrosion but silver is prone to tarnish in atmospheres containing certain sulfur or chlorine compounds. A new self-lubricating tin coating stabilize the contact resistance by retarding the rate of wear and shielding the surface from the environment thereby reducing the oxidation rate.
