This paper describes a down scaled model of a propulsion system for a high-speed railway train. The simulator consists of four line-side converters, four induction motors driven by two inverters, an eddy-current braking (ECB) system, two dynamic braking system, a flywheel and some auxiliary systems. A DC generator and four water sprinklers are used to simulate the train resistance and adhesion force. The control algorithm of traction and braking including anti-stip/slide can be developed using the simulator. The improved system characteristics of minimization of harmonics and high powerfactor are experimentally verified on it. Simulator design procedure, control algorithms and some experimental waveforms are presented in this paper.
