The shrinkage of an oxygen bubble in a soda-lime-silica glass melt was observed at 1320 deg C under weightless conditions. The radius-time curve could be obtained from bubble photographs and this curve was evaluated to give a D value of (1.1+/-0.2)x10-6 cm2/s which is believed not to be disturbed by buoyancy convection effects. The mathematical model applied to the bubble behaviour included both convection because of the bubble shrinkage and chemical reaction of the oxygen gas with the melt. It could be shown, however, that the influence of the latter process was negligible for the present case. Oxygen is dissolved molecularly in the glass network by a physical solution process.
