The production of aluminium panels for the body in white of a modern light weight car requires the use of sophisticated production methods in the press shop. This document hence describes the influence of several surface textures as well as that of dry film lubricants. In addition to this, a tool was coated with WC/C to improve the quality of the panel in the forming process. It was found in particular that dry film lubricants with additional oiling can increase the drawing ratio. This can also be achieved by optimising the electrically discharged textured (EDT) topography. If a bonazinc coated panel is required, the quality of the part as well as the output of the press line can be increased by using WC/C coating on the tool. As an alternative, the results obtained by having a wear protection panel (WPP) on the tool are also presented as a cost effective alternative for coatings.
