Underground transmission gas pipelines with field tape insulation laid in West Siberia in the 1980s are susceptible to low pH SCC. The paper deals with correlation between developing low pH SCC and operation factors including soil type and composition, 'pipe-soil' potential, pressure and temperature fluctuations, etc. The authors found out that sensitivity to low pH SCC was stimulated by deaerated corrosion environment; higher negative values of 'Pipe-soil' protection potential; pressure fluctuations up to 12%. Buried specimens on one year exposure demonstrated high hydrogenation rates at free corrosion potentials and actual 'pipe-soil' potential. Hydrogenation rates tend to increase with reduction of potential value from free corrosion one to -1.1 V (sce).
