Optimized soot particle trap system design encompasses selection of filter media, trap geometric configuration and regeneration strategies. The process can be significantly aided through the use of validated computational models based on a rigorous theoretical description of the underlying physico-chemical processes. In the present communication we have outlined the development of a state-of-the-art simulation and modeling framework for soot filter operation. The integration of the framework into the practice of automotive companies and supplier industry (currently in progress) will lead to a systematic and hence more efficient, concurrent engineering design procedure for exhaust aftertreatment components as well as for complete systems.
