This paper describes a global approach for optimization of the machine-converter group (drive) efficiency. The first step is to establish the models of salient poles synchronous machine and converter for steady-state and dynamic operations with taking care of saturation effect, iron losses and non linearity of the converter. After validation of these models, a general strategy formulation is presented and a global loss function, deduced from the models, is used for the optimization. This approach allows to increase the efficiency of the drive of about 8 to 10 %. The proposed optimization method is a global approach since it includes the machine and the converter. To improve the optimization, the motor Park model has been modified. lt takes into account the effect of saturation and of the iron losses of the synchronous machine. Concerning the converter, an averaged model taking into account the losses has been developed. From these models, a general algebraic method has been introduced. This method enables to give the analytical expressions of the different strategies. It is also possible to formulate other strategies such as the maximal torque. This formulation enables to define the possible torque-velocity domain for a given strategy by taking into account the machine saturation and the physical limitations of the electrical variables. An Algebraic General Formulation, which takes into account saturation, is in progress. The proposed work deals with the improvement of electrical vehicle autonomy. The proposed strategies can be tested on profile tests. Yet, by adding a study on motorization, the proposed models may give a sufficiently accurate idea to guide in the choice of the technologies of the machine and the converter.
