Normal engine control units work very well in a car but in an engine test, they could conceal the real faults of the engine. The built-in diagnostic system will create a lot of error codes caused by the missing signals from other sensors and systems in the car. In pre-tryout-production, it is hard to check the normal engine control units as they are developed simultaneously with the engine. To resolve these difficulties, Volvo decided to develop and design its own engine management system for the engine testing process, in order to be able to handle all the different engine types, and only change the software. A project team consisting of representatives from the engine testing department, the engine control system department, and the Automation department carried out the Engine Electronic Emulator (EEE) project. The engine test system at the assembly plant in Skovde, Sweden, presented in this paper, consists of a number of engine test cells all connected to a common host computer. All the test programs for the EEE-system are developed and stored in the host computer. The programs are downloaded to the test cell computers and stored on local hard disks. When the engine arrives to the test cell, the corresponding test program is loaded into the EEE-system. After the engine test is completed all the test results are sent to the host computer. The host computer is connected to the Volvo Area Network, so the information can be accessed from any PC connected to the network, e.g., the management, the quality department or the engine development teams. The EEE-system will enhance the know-how about the engine at the engine plant, and this will raise the quality.
