Particularly in recent years, increasing importance has been attached to environmental protection in German industry with the consequence that future production processes must be considered not only with an eye to optimizing performance, but also from an ecological perspective. Industrial enterprises today are already taking part in 'ecological audits' on a voluntary basis, through which the companies provide a serious indication that resources and energy are used economically, that wastes are primarily avoided and, if they cannot be avoided, they are recycled or disposed of properly. Cooling lubricant is one of the process materials which has great significance in this context. Automobile components made of aluminum alloys can be machined using extremely small quantities of lubricant (micro lubrication). Whereas milling operations can be carried out totally without lubricant, the targeted supply of lubricating medium is required when drilling, reboring, reaming, screwcutting and also deep drilling. In addition, a tool design which is completely 'dry-machining-compatible' is necessary ahead of work, and the machine interior must be designed in such a way that the produced chips can be removed without the rinsing effect of cooling lubricant. Initial investigations on different machining centers have verified that production with precision machining tools, the basis for complete machining of cubic aluminum components, is possible today with process safety and reliability using micro lubrication.
