Polyorganosiloxane networks have excellent oxidative and good UV environmental stability, flexibility at low temperatures and thermal stability at higher temperatures. This wide service temperature range makes these materials a candidate class of materials for high-performance adhesives and sealants, particularly for high-speed aircraft applications. Polar polysiloxane networks were prepared with cyanopropyl substituents to lower swelling in nonpolar fuels and exhibit greater adhesion than conventional nonpolar siloxanes to metal adherends. The network properties of polar poly(3-cyanopropylmethylsiloxane)(PCPMS) were investigated as a function of side-chain chemical structures. Network studies were peformed on polar PCPMS networks. Thermal properties of these novel, polar networks were good and lay within the service temperature range of aircraft applications Swelling of the PCPMS networks was very low in hydrocarbons and simulated jet fuel solvents. The polar, novel PCPMS networks proved to adhere better to metal adherends than the nonpolar PDMS networks as expected. These advantageous properties make the PCPMS elastomers good potential candidates for service as integral fuel tank sealants.
