An ideal reactive hot melt (RHM) adhesive should have high initial strength with long open time, fast cure with good melt stability, good adhesion properties and excellent heat resistance after cure. However, improving cure rate and maintaining melt stability had been difficult to achieve. The addition of a unique catalyst into adhesives made the difference in achieving both goals. The proprietary catalyst A catalyzed RHM adhesive has a viscosity increase at 250 degrees F, almost as slow as a catalyst-free control, but significantly better than the RHM adhesives with either organo metallic or amine catalyst for a one-hour test. Adding the proprietary catalyst A into RHM was the best and the simplest method to improve the curing speed and also maintain excellent melt stability. Additional tests showed that this unique catalyst also provides more reliable cure, regardless of humidity in the work environment. The fast-cured version of RHM adhesives have better curing rate and initial strength to improve assembly rates.
