The chemical composition and properties of high carbon steel cast wheels (0.66 % C, 0.75 % Mn, 0.02 % Si) of Abex Company and Griffin Company of USA were analyzed, and the microstructures were studied. It has been shown that the cast wheels with high strength and hardness, and low plasticity and toughness are due to the sorbite (or its combination with upper bainite) at wheel's tread and the coarse pearlite at wheel disc after treatment. Higher C-content and small amounts of Cr, Ni, Mo and Cu in the steel, and the coarse cast structure are responsible for such microstructure. (VDEh)
