Evaluation of wear debris in fluids is a recognized condition-based maintenance practice used to determine the health of a machine. One standard technique requires a sample of fluid be drawn and sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination of a ferrogram. As part of the Office of Naval Research's Accelerated Capabilities Initiative, the Naval Research Laboratory and the team of Lockheed Martin/Predict have developed an Optical Oil Debris Monitor capable of imaging and evaluating the wear debris on-site and determining the machine condition. This paper discusses the capability of the Lasernet Fines unit to perform debris monitoring in an condition-based maintenance role and the current laboratory and shipboard test results. The Lasernet Fines batch unit is a complete system which takes sample measurements, tracks individual pieces of equipment to allow size trending and determines the machine condition. The ability to perform oil analysis closer to the source allows for a more timely determination of machine condition, reducing the costs of operation.
