Smokeless combustion engines are planned for future cruising vessels. As this seems to be technically impossible, it requires a clear detention: What is combustion, smoke and what does smokeless mean? MAN B&W specifies what competitor Wärtsilä NSD created as innovative. The Marine engine manufacturer Wärtsilä NSD and cruise shipping company Carnival Corporation have joined forces to develop a smokeless diesel-electric propulsion system for cruise ships. The solution - codenamed EnviroEngine - is already on the horizon as the time-proven technology featured in Wärtsilä NSD's diesel engines today still is the cleanest and most efficient method for the generation of energy from hydro-carbons. Prototypes of these environmentfriendly diesel engines are expected to be available for testing within this year. Although combustion without exhaust is principally not possible it remains a question of the quality of the exhausted gas. The design, which employs electronically (common rail technology) controlled fuel and direct water injection (DWI) systems, could be applied an other vessel types where clean emissions and efficiency are particularly important. The idea is to have zero visible smoke on starting and stopping engines as well as running on even very low part-loads. Carnival explains they still believe that diesel-electric propulsion systems can be as environment-friendly as recently developed gas turbine alternatives of their main competitor RCI. The competitor MAN B&W Diesel AG, Augsburg, claims that such capabilities are already available in their four-stroke engine programme as IS (Invisible Smoke) engines. Their proven methods utilising Fuel Water Emulsification (FWE) technology allow their state-of-the-art engines to reduce soot and smoke emissions to the levels which can be only hoped for by this new co-operation. Additional benefits of this FWE technology include reduced emission of nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels far below the IMO standards in effect, today, and maintained C02 levels, since fuel-oil consumption levels are unaffected by these IS engines. In tests recently performed in Augsburg on a MAN B&W type 48/60 engine, NOx formation was reduced to about half of the allowed IMO limit; this was achieved with minimal (15 %) water injection, permitting minimal soot emission.
