The automotive engineering community is now being asked to develop new vehicles in shorter times and using fewer physical prototypes. As a result of this commercial pressure new methods of durability evaluation have to be explored and existing methods have to be combined in new ways to verify the design and validate the final product within these reduced time scales and resources. The presentation reviews some of the new fatigue evaluation tools being developed to meet this challenge. The presentation also demonstrates, with examples, how appropriate combinations of physical measurement, physical testing and analytical modelling can be used in an accelerated development program while still maintaining confidence in our predictions of final durability performance in service.
