Swedish STORA forest products company is currently reorganising their forwarding lines to Central-Europe and abroad. STORA will charter three 14000 tdw ro-ro vessels ordered by Dutch shipping company Wagenborg Shipping at German Flender Shipyard with an option an a fourth vessel. The first newbuilding of this trio was named 'Spaarneborg' and launched on 20th August 1999. All three ships are meant to take at least two million tons of cargo annually in a true intermodal sea-rail system. A basically rectangularly shaped cargo space an each deck has been achieved by means of an accurate study of structure and escape ways. To avoid engine casings obstructing the cargo area, the main engine is located far forward together with superstructure and other main plants. This option led to a long shaft running from this forward engine room all along the ship's hull through a shaft tunnel in the double bottom to the propeller aft. The tunnel is also used for pipes and other installations. The vessel's draft makes it possible to install a single controllable pitch (cp) Propeller, giving a minimum in hydrodynamic influences and losses. Calculations showed that engine power of about 11 MW was required to reach the desired speed performance. As engine power and possible propeller diameter permitted a single screw arrangement, this was chosen. Before this decision was actually made, the following alternatives for propulsion arrangements are identified: (1) four-stroke medium speed diesel engines in single-input/single output gearbox arrangement and single cp-propeller aft, (2) diesel-electric arrangement with four gensets somewhere in the hull, twininput/single output gearbox driven by two electric motors to a single cp-propeller and (3) two-stroke slow-speed diesel engine with long direct shaftline without gearbox directly coupled to a single cp-propeller. For these three alternatives, the following aspects are considered and compared: (1) efficiency of propulsion system, (2) specific fuel consumption, (3) required generator capacity, (4) investment costs, (5) repair and maintenance costs and (6) environment aspects. The efficiency for alternative (1) altogether brought 4 %, alternative (2) already 12 % and alternative (3) only 2 % losses.
