The legal restrictions concerning the use of toxic compounds and polluting processes have intensified efforts for developing alternative, environmentally friendly surface treatments and coating systems. Aircraft manufacturers and airliners have to be well equipped with reliable corrosion test methods, which reflect service conditions and provide a high degree of reproducibility for the selection of new corrosion-resistant protection systems. Additionally, short-term testing is required to reduce development periods and the time for the transfer of new systems into service. With regard to previous results on the investigation of test electrolytes and the basic environmental conditions on the aircraft, test cycles have been established which were expected to accelerate the corrosion process without changing the corrosion mechanism and failure morphology occuring in service. The final test procedure is a combination of an alternate immersion phase, an alternate humidity and temperature phase, and a deep freezing phase. The applicability for different alloy systems and the correlation with the results of the conventional standardized test method have been investigated. Especially if differentiation of high-quality corrosion protection systems is required, a reduction in testing duration of 60%-70% and more is possible by using the new method compared to the existing standard corrosion test procedure.
