This paper gives a brief review of existing offshore wind farms in Europe and planned expansion of the installed capacity. Approximately 26 MW of offshore wind energy are currently installed and operating in Denmark, Holland and Sweden. Some Northern European countries have relatively detailed plans for offshore wind farm development and these are described. If all plans are realized, more than 2500 MW of offshore wind capacity will be installed by the year 2010, providing about 40,000 new jobs and making a substantial contribution to reducing greenhouse and other pollutant gas emissions. A short assessment of the challenges remaining for successful large-scale implementation of offshore wind energy is given together with an overview of research requirements for the first decade of the new millennium.
