The development and production of an original truck-part (service console) with the SMC low pressure process by the cooperation of NOBEL and PCI are illustrated. Results and further developments are given. The new low pressure SMC formulations offer an opportunity for reduction in production investment by lowering the specifications for tooling and presses required. A comparative analysis of flex modulus, flex stress and impact showed that LP SMC, reinforced with 25 % glass fibre gave a higher performance with much lower dispersion of results in comparsion to RTM, SMC and LPMC, each reinforced with 25 % fibreglass. Low pressure SMC used at Nobel is checked by a developed measurement for hardness, flowability and reactivity. PCI conducted an SMC tooling development project using light alloys. At the end five test moulds were produced in trimmed and poured aluminium alloys and zinc alloys with the moulding sufaces coating or conversion processes. Each of the five tools was tested in actual production processes; the material used for these tests was SMC moulded at 25 bar and 150 deg C. The LP SMC process allows the use of less powerful presses and tools with lower structural performance, thereby offering substantial savings on investment, and access to SMC technology for small mass production runs.
