Smarteye Corp. (Troy, MI) developed a patented tracking system centered around infrared sensing elements and steel labels, which have a bit pattern cut into them, and installed this system with Honda's car paint department in East Liberty (OH). The identification of each car is attempted by the infrared sensors assemblies, when the car body moves through the paint room. The label holders sit in the slit for the roll-down windows. The read rates reached close to 99 %. Also painted bumpers are tracked by the new steel identification tags, which are designed to withstand month of use in a paint shop environment without deteriorating.
Honda uses IR instead of RF to ID car bodies
