Deposition of organic compounds in coke oven gas (COG) transmission pipelines cause serious problems in China Steel Corporation (CSC). The formation of the organics was found to be mainly caused by wash oil which is employed in light oil recovery system. Some strategies have been proposed to improve the quality of wash oil and to modify the recovery process in the present work. The experimental results show that the formation of organic deposit can be mainly atrributed to wash oil being carried over to the COG pipeline, rather than the existence of tar mist, light oil and naphthalene in COG. The paper demonstrates that the quality improvement of wash oil is able to reduce the organic deposition rate in the COG pipelines. Three strategies of approach were found to be most influential on the quality improvement of density, viscosity, and crystallization ability of OBD. A series of amelioration, including quality improvement of fresh wash oil quality improvement and process modification, have been implemented in the light oil recovery process. Both the frequency of cleaning COG pipelines and the organic content of deposit were found to have a significant reduction.
