Tin is used on connector components to provide improved contact behavior, solderability, corrosion resistance, low and constant contact resistance and aesthetics. But, just as different alloys accomodate different levels of performance, so do different tin coatings. By selecting the appropriate tin for the application, designers, end-user, manufacturer and purchaser can ensure performance at minimum cost. The influence of the coating thickness, the intermetallic phase thickness and the intermetallic phase structure on the wear- and contact resistance behavior will be shown. The nature of macrowear and fretting corrosion during a simulated connector insertion and withdrawal process and its effect on the contact resistance change radically due to the transformation of a tin coating into an intermetallic compound with different grain size depending on alloying elements.
