Ge and honeywell developed an angular rate sensor which uses a vibrating wire instead of the spinning mass employed in a conventional gyro. the mtbf is said to be increased between 42000 to 75000 hr. Ge reports it has used its device to measure angular rates as high as 13000 deg/sec. In the lower end of the spectrum where noise in the output signal is the limiting factor, ge quotes a threshold of 0,01 deg/sec. No warm-up time is required for operation. the system is intended to be used in the boing aircraft systems.
